Sketches is the first solo album by Andrew Horowitz. It was released under his alternative name edu at first on cassette tape in March of 2012. Eventually, however the cassette tapes sold out, and the page laid left abandoned for some time. However, Andrew eventually decided to release the album digitally for purchase later on.
Sketches was later remastered and re-released as "Sketches 3d" in 2019, with a Kickstarter to help fund physical releases.
History
The album was recorded in Andrew's New York apartment over a period of six months from August 2011 to February 2012 after the end of the Good & Evil tour.[1] The album seemingly had no real title back then, only called "cassette tape 1".[1]
The first single from the album was miss melody, released on Bandcamp in 2011.[1]
For a time the album wasn't released digitally[2], primarily because Andrew wanted it to be more "intimate" and "personal".[1] Eventually however, Andrew would cave in and release it digitally on Bandcamp for more people to hear.[3]
Sketches 3d
Sketches 3d attempted to clean up the album with better production, attributed to Andrew's recent work as a music producer. This re-release also aimed to release the album on a wider scale, as the previous version of the album had a limited release on cassette (noted in the cover art), and Bandcamp.
Kickstarter
Funding for the release of Sketches 3d was raised through the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter.
The first tier of support through kickstarter was for vinyl, though backers also, depending on how much they pledged, received a CD copy alongside their vinyl. Then additional tiers included a limited edition T shirt, and hand written lyrics to one of his songs.[4]
Andrew listed several items up for sale through the platform, such as his's old keyboard that he used for tours,[5] and his first ever acoustic guitar, with a case entirely covered by random stickers, some including classic Tally Hall Merchandise.[6]
Three exclusive bonus tracks were given to those who donated to the Kickstarter fundraiser: the full "Misfortune" performance of Lemons and Pears by the Toy Orchestra, a remastered Tomorrow and Today track, and an entirely new track Grandpa is Hiding. [7]
Release of Sketches 3d
A number of singles from Sketches 3d were released in the run up to the release of the full album. Have a Nice Day (Interludinal) was the first to be released on the 7th of June 2019. This marked the first edu release on major streaming services.[8] This was followed by four more: Miss Melody,[9] Lemons and Pears,[10] HEY YOU!,[11] and Hummingbird.[12]
Sketches 3d was released to streaming services and digital platforms on July 26th, 2019.[13]
After the Kickstarter event, signed Sketches 3d cd and vinyl versions of the album were also available periodically in Andrew's store. But as of Mar 26, 2021, Andrew tweeted that he had sold out of these "foreveeerrrrr".[14] However, a few unsigned sketches 3d CDs were sold at Andrew's live performance with Jukebox The Ghost in 2023.[15]
