Spring and a Storm is a song by Joe Hawley.
History
Spring and a Storm was first demoed sometime in 2004 with Ryan Scott. This demo includes mostly nonsense lyrics, but the arrangement is mostly there. This demo would be released on Admittedly Incomplete Demos. Joe would flesh out the lyrics and re-record it by himself later that year, releasing it on Broadjam and Indie911 not soon after.[1] Much of the lyrics and instrumentation we know is there but the bridge lyrics are very different. Joe would later state in a 2005 chatlog that he changed the bridge because it was "a bit too specific".[2]
Interpretations
- It talks about the appreciation of and for nature and the cycle of it, but how insignificant it can make you feel, until you realize that you're just as much a part of it all as anything else. --Coz 16:19, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
Trivia
- Spring and a Storm was referenced in the game Borderlands 3, the lyric "Mr. Moon, tell us about the sky" can be heard randomly if you kill an enemy[3]
- Rob and Zubin sing the parts of the children during the bridge in live performances [4]
- The demo version of Spring and a Storm uses the opening hum from The Bidding
- A snippet of the song can be heard on the radio in Joe's Dream in the fourth episode of Tally Hall's Internet Show
- In certain live performances, Andrew Horowitz sings the lines sung by Mr. Moon with a vocoder effect. [4]
Lyrics
One time I tried to sing About spring and a storm But you know How it goes Blah blah blah blah Blah blah blah blah Blah All along Won't you please stop complaining I'm playing a song But all the rain comes down the same Falling to from where it came On the ground then back around Up into the sky I wish you could've heard the music When the clouds growled overhead I finally felt enthusiastic I finally felt alive Blah blah blah blah Blah blah blah blah Blah So you said Would it please you to listen To thunder instead Man the rain came down that day And it drained my soul away And I wondered why I even Bothered to try Mr. Moon Tell us about the sky The sky is deep and dark and eternally high Many people think that's where you go when you die Do you? Well I think you return to obscure Or wherever you were Before you were But I won't let you lose yourself In the rain *** We have so much left to sing There's a storm for every spring All you see and you and me Became from a star (You're a star) (Silent explosive and Silent explosive and) Create until nothing is left to create and The universe bursts with an overworked sigh then Pretend to pretend to re-crown the creation and Sing the same thing 'til the clouds start to cry and then Over and over and over again and then Over and over and Never again
Demo Lyrics
One time I tried to sing About spring and a storm But you know How it goes Blah blah blah blah Blah blah blah blah Blah All along Won't you please stop complaining I'm playing a song But all the rain drops in the same Falling to from where they came And in time they all evaporate Back to the sky I wish you could've heard the music When the clouds growled overhead I finally felt enthusiastic I finally felt alive Blah blah blah blah Blah blah blah blah Blah So you said Would it please you to listen To thunder instead Man the rain came down that day And it drained my dreams away And then I almost never tried to try anymore Mr. Moon? Yeah? Tell us about the sky The sky is deep and dark and eternally high Many people think that's where you go when you die Do you? Well it seems to be tricky to tell Whether ever a heaven or hell Play pretend, my friend, and lose yourself in the rain We have so much left to sing There's a storm for every spring All you see and you and me Became from a star You're a star Yes you are (Silent explosive and Silent explosive and) Create until nothing is left to create and The universe bursts with an overworked sigh then Pretend to pretend to re-crown the creation and Sing the same thing 'til the clouds start to cry and then Over and over and over again and then Over and over and Never again Blah blah blah blah Blah blah blah blah Blah
Original Demo Lyrics
Sometimes I like to walk Outside in the rain I like the way it feels Upon my brain The rain One day my family and I went away for a little while When we came back the garage was flooded The rain had come inside and there was a lot of water Blah blah blah blah Blah blah blah blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Mr. Moon? Yeah? Tell us about the sky The sky is deep and dark and blue and very high Many people think that's where you go when you die What do you think? See all these stars? When you die, you become a star (You're a star You're a star You're a star) You're a star You're a star Yes you are You're a star Yes you are Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah blah blah blah You're a star Yes you are Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah Blah blah blah blah blah Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
