He joined Tally Hall in 2004 after the band's original drummer [[Steve Gallagher]] quit in May of 2004. Ross was invited to try out for the band by Joe after remembering a time him and Ross met years back. Ross recalls another very good drummer by the name of Mike Swain also trying out at the same time and assumed there must not have been quite as good a personality mesh with Swain, because his talents were enough to get the job.

Ross was an undergrad at the University of Michigan, studying science, and majoring in Molecular Biology, but he put his studies on hiatus to play and tour with Tally Hall. Ross later went back to finish the degree that he started.[3]

Though primarily the drummer for Tally Hall, Ross sang the lead vocals for Mucka Blucka, and also sang for their live cover of Everyday by Buddy Holly.[4][5] He also contributed his voice as the rapid-fire auctioneer in The Bidding.[6]

In Tally Hall's Internet Show Ross is the shark that can be seen drumming in various locales.[4]

Ross moved to Brooklyn in 2008, where he discovered a love for DJ'ing and composing song mash-ups. He DJs under the name Mr. F, but more recently he has also been billed as 'DJ Ross Federman of Tally Hall'

Between the years of 2013 and 2017, Ross had 7 published scientific papers[7][8]

In 2016, Ross furthered his studies by studying for a Ph.D. in Immunology at the Yale School of Medicine[3][9]

In 2023 Ross was inducted into the Bloomsfield Hills Schools Alumni Band Hall of Fame.[10]

Personal Life

Ross has a brother, Max Federman,[11] who is an Israel-based cameraman for the news network ILTV.[12]

Ross married his wife Ashley Gard in June 2018. They moved to Boston, Massachusettes in 2019, where he now lives and works. He currently works in biotech as a protein engineer and immunologist.[13] On April 27th, 2022, Ross and Ashley had their first baby, Ira, at Brigham and Women's Hospital.[14]

Ross has expressed interests in home cooking, showing off his dishes on his Instagram account.[15] Ross also has a great interest in reel-to-reel machines and tapes, and collects them as a hobby.[16]

Other Projects

Starting in 2009 Ross started live DJing and released 3 mixtapes under the name Mr. F, compromised of blended mashups of popular songs, accompanied with some funnier and sillier songs thrown in at times.[13]

In 2011 Ross co-produced 'The Good Company EP' by Shane Maux. According to the bandcamp page for the EP, Shane describes it as: "a collection of songs I made after Ross Federman (from the band Tally Hall) asked me if i wanted to rap over some beats he made." [17] Shane Maux later contributed vocals to ミラクルミュージカル's track Labyrinth from the album Hawaii: Part II[18]

Ross recorded, produced, and mixed The Carrels' self-titled EP, as well as playing a number of instruments for the recording. The Carrels EP was released June 19th, 2011[19][20]

Ross had a large hand in the mixing and production of ミラクルミュージカル's album Hawaii: Part II, which was released in December of 2012.[21][13]

Ross remixed Charlene Kaye's song "I Dream an Ocean", which was released on an album of remixes on February 26th, 2013.[22] Charlene Kaye also contributed vocals to the ミラクルミュージカル track Labyrinth.

In 2014 Ross collaborated with fellow Tally Hall bandmate Rob Cantor on his solo album Not A Trampoline, contibuting programming work.[23]

In 2017 Ross had a brief stint playing drums in the band Autumn York[24][25]

Ross played drums on Abject Joy's EP 'Home', which was released in January of 2018.[26]

While in grad school Ross played pans with the steel band.[27]

In 2023 and 2024 Ross would act as a touring drummer for Andrew Horowitz's solo project edu, performing at some dates alongside other touring guests Bora Karaca, and Illicit Ghost.

  • He is a very big fan of the album "Dookie" by Green Day[29]
  • Ross doesn't know much about Winnipeg.[30]
  • Ross is the youngest member of Tally Hall, despite his salt & pepper hair color, and stern jawline.
  • Ross’s hair is naturally gray, and started turning so around age 15, and he hasn’t even considered dying it and has embraced it.[31]
  • Ross was also a voice actor as one of the general public in the video game L.A. Noire[32] Attempts have been made to find lines he recorded, but none have been found so it is possible these lines were unused.
  • In 2006, Ross recommended OK Computer by Radiohead, Illinois by Sufjan Stevens, Abbey Road by The Beatles, Before These Crowded Streets by Dave Matthews Band, and Ben Folds Five's self-titled album on Amazon.com. [33]
  • Ross' favorite colour is green, and his favourite ice cream flavor is mint chocolate chip.[28]
  • Ross is Jewish.
  • Ross' favorite song on Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum is Haiku.[34]
  • Ross learned to drum on a drum kit donated to Lahser High School by Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers.[35]
