The Bidding is a song by Joe Hawley, sung in the point-of-view of 3 people competing to be bid on for a date.

History

The Bidding was first released on Broadjam as a solo demo by Joe Hawley in early 2005. [1] It was then released on The Pingry EP, recorded at a studio in the University of Michigan. The introduction hums to The Bidding were originally meant for Spring And A Storm, as shown on an early demo for Spring And A Storm before it had most of its lyrics. Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum 2008 has a entirely different recording than M.M.M.M 2005, having different intro harmonies.

The recording on M.M.M.M. 2008 has a much slower tempo, being about 10 seconds slower than 2005's. The keys and bell sound during Rob Cantor's verse are also much louder in the mix.

Trivia

  • Ross Federman is the rapid-fire auctioneer voice in the instrumental bit just before the last verse.[2]
  • The Bidding was popular on Garageband.com, a site for posting original music in the early 2000s. It would be the track of the day on two separate occasions (June 23rd and August 22nd 2005) as well as the "Most Rocking" track, "Best Bass", and "Best Lyrics" on the week of June 23rd 2005.[3]
  • More recently, The Bidding has gotten popular on the social media site TikTok, with millions of videos featuring the song (albeit sped up).
  • A rough mix of the track uses a different vocal take for one line.

Lyrics

I've been sleeping in a cardboard box
Spending every dollar at the liquor shop
And even though I know I haven't got a lot
I'll try to give you love until the day you drop

I've been training like a Pavlov dog
Let my independence out to take a hike
All you got to do is activate my bell
And I'll fetch you anything you like

Going once! Going twice!
Every man here has a price!
Over where? Over there!
Sold! To not a single lady in here

I've been in like a thousand times
Dated every woman in the atmosphere
I've been to every continent
Broken all the hearts in every hemisphere
And if I'm not the type of guy you like to circumvent
Just remember not to love me when I disappear

I graduated at the top
I like to take advantage of the bourgeoisie
So if you have a fantasy of being a queen
Maybe you should blow a couple bucks on me

Going once! Going twice!
Won't these gentlemen suffice?
Any here? Any there?
Any motions anywhere?
Going twice! Going thrice!
Guess this means we'll go four times a lady

I promise I'll be all you'll need, ever need
You'll never have to shop around (don't shop around)
And I'll give you all you'll ever need, ever need
Don't worry I will never let you down, let you down
Don't worry I will never let you down

So many ladies are wanting for mates
And the prospects are good but the date's never great
Over here! Over there! Over where? Anywhere!
They're too busy with winning the bidding to care
And he's
Sold

2004 Demo Lyrics

I’ve been sleeping in a cardboard box
Spending every dollar at the liquor shop
And even though I know I haven’t got a lot
I’ll try to give you love until the day you drop

I’ve been training like a household dog
Working with the babies and the safety bike
All you’ve gotta do is activate my cell
And then I’m gonna fetch you anything you like

Going once! Going twice!
Every man here has a price!
Over where? Over there!
Sold to not a single woman in here!

I’ve been in like a thousand times
Dated every lady in the atmosphere
I’ve been to every continent
Broken all the hearts in every hemisphere
