Free Bird is a song by Allen Collins and Ronnie Van Zant, and performed by the southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd.

A staple at concerts for many decades is to shout "Play Free Bird" as a joke, likely due to the song's length. In 2006, Tally Hall would learn the song note-by-note for their live concerts because people love shouting it out and they wanted to "teach them a lesson."[1] Tally Hall would perform Free Bird usually at the beginning or in the encore of a concert from 2006 to 2009.

After 2009 it was retired from the setlist for unknown reasons.

Lyrics

If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
For I must be traveling on now
'Cause there's too many places I've got to see
But if I stay here with you, girl
Things just couldn't be the same
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now
And this bird you cannot change

Oh, oh, oh, oh
And the bird you cannot change
And this bird, you cannot change
Lord knows, I can't change

Bye-bye, baby, it's been sweet love, yeah, yeah
Though this feelin' I can't change
Please don't take it so badly
'Cause Lord knows, I'm to blame

If I stay here with you, girl
Things just couldn't be the same
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now
And this bird you cannot change

Oh, oh, oh, oh
And the bird you cannot change
And this bird, you cannot change
Lord knows, I can't change

Lord help me, I can't change
Lord, I can't change
Won't you fly high, free bird, yeah
