The Pingry EP is a collection of live, acoustic, and one-take performance demos released by Tally Hall in April 2005. Originally, these tracks were recorded to have something to give record companies, in addition to Complete Demos, to show what other songs they've been working on.

History

At some point in early 2005, Tally Hall and Bora Karaca would record some acoustic tracks in a Music School classroom, using an Oktava MK012-01 compact microphone. Later (or earlier, Bora seems to not remember which happened when), Bora would record them performing The Bidding for at the University of Michigan studio.[2]

Part of the tracklisting is archival recordings from 2002 to 2005. Good Day was a radio performance at the Mitch Albom show on WJR Radio in May 2004, Just A Friend is a live performance recording at The Blind Pig on March 24th 2005, and Yearbook is the first attic recording Tally Hall did in 2003, before recording Party Boobytrap.

An outlier is Cell Phone Call, from Tally Hall's first live show at the Frieze Basement in December 2002. It's included as a hidden track and is simply stage banter during a cell phone call between Rob Cantor and Joe Hawley.

The EP was named after The Pingry School in New Jersey, where Andrew went to high school. Tally Hall had been a staple band at the annual Pingry School Spring Fling concert for a few years but 2005 was the last time they performed there. The band also sold copies at their June 1st show at The Ark in the same year.[1]

The Pingry EP was distributed in standard white paper CD envelopes, the kind with a transparent, round window on the front. Inside was the CD-R plus a B&W photocopied insert with the track listing and liner notes. The insert artwork shows a picture from the opening of The Pingry School, with a highlight on the school's founder Dr. John Francis Pingry. Copies allegedly also came with orders of Complete Demos.[3]
