Never Meant To Know is a song by Rob Cantor. It is the first song on Good & Evil.

Interpretations

Although the meaning of the song has never been explicitly stated by the band, you can gather from the lyrics that this song is most likely about the early stages of humanity, and how there are some things in the universe that we cannot know, and maybe we're not supposed to, and how life just brings up more questions when one finds the answers to others. This ties into a seemingly overarching theme on the album of an almost Medieval society and it's music/cultures. However, once again, this is all just speculation and has not been confirmed by the band.

Lyrics

Woke up today with a lay of the land
Feather in cap & the sun in the sand
It was easy
It was easy to understand
Everything suddenly falls out of sight
Every attachment is made of the light
That you offered
You have offered to give me life

See the sky & all the land together again
See the way the earth can stay below
Who do we think we are?
Everything plays a part
There are some things we are never meant to know

Having enjoyed all the meat from the bone
Is perfectly equal to being alone
It was even
But you breathe & I turn to stone
Everything suddenly looks like a sign
Easy to see from the outermost clime
I believe in what I leave in the way behind

See the sky & all the land together again
See the way the earth can stay below
Who do we think we are?
Everything plays a part
There are some things we are never meant to know

& all the parts combine to one
& all of us around the sun
Everything will fall away
To order from the disarray

See the sun the shadows cast
From all the times I floated past
See the ocean spinning out
With all the hope & all the doubt

See the sky & all the land together again
See the way the earth can stay below
Who do we think we are?
Everything plays a part
There are some things we don't understand
Reasons on the other hand
There are some things we are never meant to know

Early Lyrics

Everything suddenly falls out of sight
Every attachment is made of the light
That you offered
You have offered to give me life

See the sky & all the land together again

Everyone plays a part
There are some things we are never meant to know

Having enjoyed all the meat from the bone

It was even
But you breathe & I turn to stone
Everything suddenly looks like a sign
Easy to see from the outer clime
I believe in what I leave in the way behind

See the sky & all the land together again
See the way the earth can stay below
Who do we think we are?
Everyone plays a part
There are some things we are never meant to know

& all the parts combine to one
& all of us around the sun
The ocean will not fall away
And order to the disarray

See the sun the shadows cast
From all the times I floated past
See the ocean spinning out
With all the hope & all the doubt

See the sky & all the land together again
See the way the earth can stay below
Who do we think we are?
Everyone plays a part
There are some things we don't understand
Reasons on the other hand
There are some things we are never meant to know

And after that, just keep alternating between E and E9.

NOTE: The chords in the bridge aren't actually played on a guitar, but I'm 99% sure that these are the chords that Rob plays in the song.
