Sacred Beast is a song by Joe Hawley which appears on Tally Hall's sophomore album Good & Evil.
History
Sacred Beast was first performed at The Ralph Lauren Rugby Store on the night of October 24th, 2008.[1] This performance, and the demo, featured an alternative last verse and different refrains.[2]
Recording
The album version uses a vocoder on each vocal.
The whistles and flutes in the song were recorded during the mastering process for Good & Evil, likely in January 2010. A rough mix without flutes and whistles circulates from a Needlejuice Records test pressing for Good & Evil, in which the unmastered version that the band supplied, was missing flutes and whistles.[3] This was fixed before the repress went on sale.
Lyrics
We live in the service of the king Almighty in control of everything As the queen decides who lives and dies tonight We will sing Love was never more than going (whistling) Easiest thing Our mission is to slay the sacred beast Who has come to claim our innocence at least & though those who went before us won't return For the feast We'll be riding high in going (whistling) Worst of all it knows Its only truth is made of lies Wanting for aught & ever wise So there will need to be a compromise Easier to close our eyes Seeing the other sides of our disguise We thought we had found a separate peace Thought all our pain had finally been released But as long as it's alive we'll never rest In one piece Meanwhile may it join in going (whistling)
Demo Lyrics
We live in the service of the king Almighty in control of everything As the queen decides who lives and dies Tonight we will sing Love was never more than simple (Whistling) Easiest thing Our mission is to slay the sacred beast Who has come to claim our innocence at least And though those who went before us won't return For the feast We'll be riding high and swinging (Whistling) 'til we're deceased First of all we know that we are dying for our lives Wanting for naught and no surprise So there will need to be a war for love Fight in spite of death above Biting the hand that feeds its own demise We thought we had found a separate peace Thought all our pain had finally been released But as long as it's alive we'll never rest In one piece Meanwhile, may it join in whistling (Whistling) Worst of all it knows its only truth is made of lies Wanting for aught and ever-wise So there will need to be a compromise Easier to close our eyes See the other sides of our disguise We thought love was only nice or mean Perhaps it's something vaguely inbetween So while neighbors fight to paint their yards The best shade of green We'll be in the garden growing (whistling)
2008 second verse
Our mission is to slay the sacred beast Who has come to claim our innocence at least And though those that came before us live to die As its feast We'll be riding high and swinging (Whistling) 'til we're deceased
