Hymn for a Scarecrow is a song by Joe Hawley, and is track 7 on the Tally Hall album Good & Evil.[1] On the 15th of April 2022, a demo of the song was uploaded to Admittedly Incomplete Demos[2]
Composition
Joe has confirmed that the inspiration for the song can be found in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and the scarecrow that can be found ingame.[3] In a seperate interview, when asked about the song's inspiration, Joe stated that "When I was very young, I lived on a farm road called 'Morrow Lane' and there was a farmer named 'Jim Morrow'. I was thinking about that area when I wrote the song."[4]
Hymn for a Scarecrow is in 6/8 time signature with the exception of the chorus, which is in 9/8. Ross Federman sings in this song, performing the "the wind knows" refrain in the coda, while Bora Karaca whistles.
Trivia
- There seems to be a tornado during this song, a nod to the movie The Wizard of Oz which also famously features a scarecrow in it.[citation needed]
- The song is called "A Hymn for a Scarecrow" on the Good & Evil Advance CD, and it used to be on Needlejuice's Bandcamp page. [5]
Lyrics
You hang around for a living Somewhere between all the land & the sky Being by never forgiving Nobody knows you & neither do I Birds may believe at a distance You wear a grin & keep perfectly still Driven away with persistence I wonder if they have wondered or will ever wonder Ever wonder Farmer Jim hums when he's all alone He may imagine you heard & he knew You wouldn't hear what he might have known I wonder whether he wonders if you ever wonder Ever wonder Oh, Scarecrow Maybe the wind knows Whether you wonder Who's calling your name Scarecrow Maybe the wind knows Whether you wonder If you are to blame Mother Earth's love whispered to me (and it wasn't her fault) Real is a feeling & feeling is real All of you are flowing through me But you wouldn't know how to fathom or feel When the wind blows The wind knows The wind knows Oh, Scarecrow Maybe the wind knows Whether you wonder Who's calling your name Shame how nobody knows you Only who wonders if you are to blame Saving the grain of your golden domain Without even reasoning why The crows seem to know where you need them to go Igniting a spark in their minds so they circle & fly Fly (Repeated) You hang around for a living Blown in the wind like a pinned butterfly Monarch of ever forgiving Some of us wonder if you want to die Would you want to die? How I wonder Ever wonder (Repeated) (The wind knows)
