Crazy F**** (sometimes written as "Crazy F***",[1] or "Crazy Food"[2]) is a song by Joe Hawley from the album Joe Hawley Joe Hawley.
Composition
The opening of the song interpolates the melody of the traditional English folk song "Scarborough Fair", as used in the soundtrack to 'Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure Video Game' on the NES.[3] Crazy Food makes reference to "Scarborough Fair"'s lyrics, also, as "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary," are referenced in the shopping list/rap part of the song.
Crazy Food contains samples of the fight song and various sound effects from Nintendo's "Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!!"[4]. It also contains a complete cover performed by Max Gleason (AKA Smoove[sic]/Smooth McGroove) of the "Green Greens" theme from Nintendo's "Kirby's Dream Land" starting at "You have more? ..." and ending at "GEWURZTRAMINER".[5] The song also samples Abobo's Theme from "Double Dragon", and "Downstream" by Shira Kammen, from the video game "Braid".[6]
Music Video
A music video for Crazy Food was released on the 2nd of May 2017, uploaded to Joe Hawley's YouTube Page[7]. Starting in 2017, production assistant Patrick Ratliff released a series a videos showcasing behind the scenes footage of the filming of the Crazy Food Music Video, titled "Behind The Food"[8] The most recent of which was released December 11th 2022.[9] The videos showcase the troubled production of shooting the video, and problems they encounter, such as Joe's camera dying in the first shot,[10] transporting a shopping cart[11] and guarding the shopping cart.[12]
Song Meanings
"Crazy F****" is a song about the plethora of food at a farmer's market.
Trivia
- In the music video for Crazy F***, the beginning of the video gives 2 callbacks: Joe samples audio from Boralogue VI and has an homage to his film project, The Other Way.
- At the end of the song, there is a reversed clip of somebody saying "are you going to eat that disgusting food, really?" in Japanese. Japanese lyrics have appeared in other Joe Hawley songs, such as Space Station Level 7 (宇宙ステーションのレベル7)
- The purple GameBoy seen at the beginning of the music video was purchased broken as a prop by Joe, which he plans on sending as a random gift to "some dude."
- While some varieties of samphire do produce flowers, the particular wording may also be referencing the recurring Fire Flower from the Super Mario series.
